Maintain your Sight, Maintain Your Well Being: Advanced Eye Surgeries with Great Outcomes, Right Here in San Antonio

A cataract causes areas of clouding on the eye’s lens. This clouding will progressively worsen with age, resulting in:

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Significant trouble seeing at night
  • Sensitivity to the sun
  • Poor depth perception
  • Difficulty reading
  • Halos forming around bright lights
  • Difficulty distinguishing colors

Cataracts are fairly common, and affect over 50% of people over the age of 60. Your risk of developing them increases if you have suffered any trauma to the eye, are a smoker, or if you have diabetes. A cataract may form in one or both eyes, but will unquestionably affect your vision over time.

Major Causes of Cataracts:

Cataracts can form at any age and for many reasons. Typically the clouding is due to a change in the protein structure of the natural lens. The most common reasons include:

  • Family history
  • Age
  • Diabetes
  • UV light
  • Medications – especially steroids
  • Eye Trauma
  • Previous Eye Surgery
  • Radiation

What are the different types?

There are many forms of cataracts some of which are easier to remove than others. Some cause more symptoms with small pupils, while others cause more symptoms when the pupil is large.

  • Nuclear Sclerotic Cataract is mostly related with age and are slow growing.
  • Cortical Cataract is related to Diabetes.
  • Posterior Subcapsular type is related to Steroids and can have very quick onset.
  • Posterior Polar type is congenital (you are born with it) and has a high complication rate.
  • Pseudoexfoliation Cataract is related to a special syndrome that can also cause glaucoma. This condition has a high complication rate. It is also genetic and has been found in patients with Scandinavian, Russian and East European ancestry.
