Maintain your Sight, Maintain Your Well Being: Advanced Eye Surgeries with Great Outcomes, Right Here in San Antonio

Those Suffering from Keratoconus Can Regain Their Vision with INTACS

Keratoconus is a corneal condition where the central part of the cornea becomes conical in shape. This causes blurry vision that cannot be correct using glasses. It is usually a progressive condition that worsens with time. In the early stages, glasses do not work, but contact lenses are effective. In the moderate stages, the contact lenses become less comfortable, and start to fall out. In the advanced stages, the cornea has either scarred down, or has become very irregular in shape.

Early stage keratoconus is treated with contact lenses. If you are experiencing discomfort with your contacts, or if they are falling off, you might be progressing to the moderate stage of keratoconus. INTACS, on outpatient procedure, can help restore a more regular shape to the cornea. This will allow the contact lens to stay in your eye more comfortably. In late stage keratoconus, only a corneal transplant will improve your vision.

INTACS involves making a tunnel in the cornea, and placing corneal rings in certain locations with certain ring sizes. The placement is customized for your eye to maximize the comfort of your contact lens. It often delays or eliminates the need for a corneal transplant. It has a shorter recovery period than corneal transplants, with fewer side effects. INTACS are covered by most insurance plans.

How to Benefit from INTACS

To learn more about the benefits of INTACS, schedule a consultation with Dr. Alsheikh. We will provide a comprehensive review of keratoconus, the INTACS procedure, possible benefits, and any potential side effects. We will also work with you, and your insurance company, to ensure that the procedure is covered under your insurance plan.
